Polish developer Gameleons is known in the community of mobile players mainly for first person shooter 3D Alpha Zone. The developer is announcing their first football game now. The portfolio of the football games genre is growing recently, the new releases such Real Football 2008, FIFA 08 or Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 were published within last 2 months. Let's see if Euro Football (EF) will be tough competitor for other mobile football games. Or it will be the disappointment?

EF is not real football simulation game like games mentioned above. It is more arcade than simulation. Did you play mobile game Playman World Soccer (PWS) developed by Mr. Goodliving, which was released at the beginning of year 2006? At that time 2005 Real Football was the most popular game and it fought for the throne of mobile football games with FIFA 06. PWS was based on the action arcade gameplay with 7 players in each team, excellent graphics, very smooth play and it became hit within short time. It was the best mobile soccer game for most players during year 2006. And many of them are playing this game also nowadays rather than football games from Gameloft and Electronic Arts. EF is nothing else but a clone of PWS. EF is releases one and half year after PWS but seems like older game than PWS. I must say at the beginning: EF is a disappointment for me.

The graphics of EF is not as nice as the graphics of PWS. It is quite simple. It is similar to PWS but does not reach the level of its graphics. You see the playing field from above. One football goal is in the direction of the upper part of the display and second goal is in the direction of the bottom part of the display. You have to attack the opponent’s goal always up.
You will play on various fields and also in various weather conditions; it makes the gameplay more interesting.

The music in EF is also worse like in PWS. You will always hear only one melody – the same melody is in the game menu and also during the game. In PWS there were some football sounds in the game and I think it was better. The melody in EF will bore you after couple of minutes and you will turn the sound off.

The game has three main modes: Friendly game, League or Cup. You can choose from 16 different national teams in each mode: Italy, France, Germany, Netherlands, Portugal, England, Spain, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Croatia, Scotland, Romania, Greece, Russia, Poland and Turkey. The developers didn't buy the license for player names, for example in the team of Czech Republic you will find names like Beros (instead of Baros) or Keller (instead of Koller) – it was also a problem of PWS. If we compare it with Real Football 2008, which has full license for all players and you can play for all European national teams, the possibilities of ES are very poor.

The game is not as quick and smooth as in PWS. When you make a pass it takes too long, sometimes you think that the ball is going to your player and it only passes you. Sometimes the game is not clear. It also happened to me that two players sprinted opposite each other and when they met, they were stuck for 10 seconds. Other example: I made slide and the opponent ran further on. If you play in the defense, there is no possibility to switch between your defending players. The biggest problem is that you can't change the length of the game; there is only the default setting. There is also no possibility of changing difficulty of the game. Mainly at the beginning you will loose the games, I think that the game is not appropriate for the beginners. It is very hard to shoot the goal. I shot most goals from the distance from the left side. If I came with my player straight in front of the goal, the goalkeeper always caught the ball. The controls of EF is similar to PWS – the players run automatically, you only change the direction.

I will mention also one big positive of the game – the multiplayer. Gameleons named it – multiYou! – it is Bluetooth multiplayer and we will find it also in other games from this developer. Not many games support Bluetooth multiplayer nowadays, so this feature can attract many players to EF. One question now: Would you like to play the game with your friend if you played it in singleplayer mode and you were disappointed? I think that you will try it, but not play it for hours.

For a game that topped nearly everyone's Most Wanted list in 2004, it was surprising to see so many gamers react negatively to id Software's DOOM 3. Although just about everyone could agree that the game looked better than anything that had come before it, a lot of people had problems with the gameplay itself. Whether it was the fact that you had to repeatedly switch between your weapon and your flashlight or simply a matter of opponents with weak AI, the game that everyone was waiting for was met with some surprisingly harsh criticisms. Now, however, the team from id is ready to unleash their hellish vision on the Xbox, and they've taken some of their fans' criticisms to heart.

In many ways, most of us have played DOOM 3 before, given that it's basically a "retelling" of the game that set PCs on fire back in the early 90s. The game begins as your character (known only as "Marine") arrives on Mars amid a cloud of controversy (and Martian dust). It seems that one of the Union Aerospace Corporation's top scientists has been ill advisedly mucking around with some cutting edge technology, and the company's top brass is none too happy with the situation. Employees are disappearing, strange events are occuring with greater frequency, and everyone is uneasy with the situation at hand. Of course, this is only what you're able to glean from overheard coversations and found PDAs.

The first thing I noticed when entering the world DOOM 3 creates was the nearly seamless presentation. When the game starts, you'll find yourself walking through the halls, interacting with other employees and learning a bit about what went on before you landed on the planet. You're presented with a PDA at the beginning, and this will act as your information center as you play through the game, accessible by a quick press of the black button. There, the game's surprisingly deep story unfolds through a series of company emails, video footage, and audio recordings.

In addition to the PDA your character carries, the game does a masterful job of keeping the players firmly rooted in the world id created. Whenever you approach a door panel or computer console, your reticle will turn into a finger icon, allowing you to press buttons to open doors or move elevators. While it might not seem like much, the fact that you'll never have to access a separate menu makes the game feel much more realistic. The in-game presentation is excellent, as are the smooth cutscenes which help to flesh out the storyline.

Of course, PDAs and fake computer panels aren't the reason you want to play DOOM 3, are they? You want to see monsters, and you won't be disappointed in the least. While all of the character models are fantastic, it's the demons and satanic cherubs that will really take your breath away. They move quickly and smoothly, attacking without hesitation. The creatures are fast and brutal, although they don't show very much in the way of intelligence, at least on the standard level of difficulty. Everything in the game has been realistically modeled and textured with normal mapping, from the creatures you'll face to the frightened employees you meet while you're making your way through the decidedly industrial setting.

Alpha Wing should feel pretty familiar to just about every R-Type and space-shooter fan out there. Aliens are taking over, wiping out the Intergalactic Alliance, and it's come down to one ship to take them all out. Yes that's right, YOU are the galaxy and mankind's only hope! But generic story aside, this game is high quality from start to finish. The game follows your progress as you pilot through space and into the various alien worlds, on your way to rub them out.

Gameplay starts fairly standard with dodging and firing upon little floater enemies who dance around in chorus lines. But as you go along, enemies become increasingly complex and begin firing back, taking evasive action and even using a few special attacks. The enemies, for their size are illustrated wonderfully. All sprites in this game look consistent yet exude personality; Some ships sprint into frame then pull back as if they've just noticed your vessel, which makes sense. And their AI is kicked up several notches the farther you get into your journey.

The first thing that you'll likely notice about this game is just how gorgeous it is. A lot has been done with the art, especially at these tiny dimensions, and later levels in the alien caves and compounds are ripe with Contra-like detail. The backgrounds scroll on a different layer than sprites, so you really get a sense of depth while moving about. Along the way, you'll also begin encountering enemies locked into their surroundings, or even obstacles in those surroundings (like walls that seal up in front of you). Detailed effects such as mushroom explosions and chunks of metal that fly out of destroyed vessels make the game anything but static, and even your weapon upgrades get pretty cool looking as you go along.

Essentially, you're just shooting and dodging for 10 or so levels, but the care with which Macrospace handled this title really makes it a fun journey. There are three boss battles where the scrolling stops and you hover to kick some giant sprite butt, dodging the various attacks they throw at you. Controls on the game are thankfully tight, but how well you do will ultimately come down to your phone, because you're gonna be giving whatever arrow (or 4,6,8,2) keys you have a pretty good working over. Your ship moves in 8 directions, for the really gifted cell gamers. You also have the option to either have auto-fire enabled, so your craft is always shooting (give that right thumb a rest) or you can set it to manual, to make sure every shot is timed just right. Pressing the '5' button enables a shield, which will run down your shield energy meter until it's empty. This will protect you temporarily from fire, but not collisions.

The game actually gets pretty difficult along the way. Three lives, and it's Game Over. What's great is that when a level is beaten, it's then unlocked for future play, so you won't have to meddle through your least favorite levels to get to your favorites; Just select it from the menu. In addition to keeping track of your progress, you can also submit high scores within your phone or online (oddly enough, the scoring system even includes smilies and a dictionary. Wha?). Music is missing (you get a short title track at bootup, and beyond that it's bleeps and blips), but that's not uncommon for an application this size.
